 | Welcome to Artesian Drive Public School.
I have had the pleasure of opening three new schools as a teacher, however opening Artesian Drive P.S. in Sept 2004, and building it into a world class exemplary school since then as principal, has been by far the most exciting opportunity of my career.
I believe that it is the people who create “school and student success”. Yes, the building is still lovely and all continues to look new, however it is the people who work with your children daily who truly make the difference. Artesian Drive P.S. is an amazing school!
When we opened, I had the privilege of interviewing 316 teachers in order to find the 30 teachers I have been allotted by the Board’s staffing formula. Since then, we have interviewed even more teachers and have added more exemplary staff to replace those who have relocated to other boards, left on maternity leave, etc. As you can imagine, I have found an outstanding, hand-picked group of educators! Each teacher has: - a strong knowledge of student learning, instructional and assessment practices and program planning;
- great interpersonal skills and a sense of team, as well as
- solid intrapersonal skills that make each person a caring, enthusiastic, student-focused, positive educator
I have also interviewed over 50 teaching assistants in the past to find the 4 we are permitted to hire. Each is an energetic, caring, knowledgeable individual who has assisted several children in many capacities. Our teaching assistants are professional, knowledgeable and team-workers who go well above and beyond to meet the needs of our children.
Our head secretary, Mrs. Reed is a dynamo! She is approachable, welcoming, efficient, and cares about the staff and children. Her skills are refined and I am sure that you will enjoy your interactions with her over the up-coming years. She has a wonderful half time assistant secretary, Mrs. Antonacci. We marvel at how much Mrs. Antonacci can accomplish in just half the day and yet she finds the time to assist all who need her. This is no small feat! Both of our secretaries work diligently as a team to ensure that Artesian is a place where all feel like they belong, are valued and have the support of an office staff who can balance the paper with processes, without losing sight that we are all here for the children. You will adore this front line to our school! When you visit, it will be immediately evident that our building is clean and orderly. We have a fabulous custodial team who takes great pride in keeping Artesian looking new and invitational. What a beautiful learning environment for your children!
Artesian Drive P.S. is a school where “learning” is the focus for all.
Students receive quality programming by highly enthusiastic and dedicated teachers. All students are important and we make the appropriate accommodations and modifications to facilitate success for all. We live by our collective Code of R.E.S.P.E.C.T. and work very hard to create a safe and welcoming learning environment. The bottom line is respect. One must display respect to each other, the property and to oneself at all times.
Teachers are also learners. Every teacher at Artesian Drive belongs to a “Learning Community”. In this group, they create action plans that include: - Their Vision, Mission and Values
- SMART goals (SMART being the acronym for specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-bound)
- Sources of data that will be collected to determine the success of the goal
- Criteria by which the data will be assessed and conclusions will be made
- Indications of how teacher learning has impacted on student success
Teachers meet monthly and attend in-service that supports personal and professional growth in their targeted areas of interest. To date, teachers have indicated an interest in Learning Communities that include a focus on: - Advocacy for Learners
- Safe and Nurturing Schools
- MST (Mathematic/Science/Technology)
- Literacy
- Computer
Teachers in each group are required to track and document their progress in their chosen area, however all teachers are invited to attend all in-service for any group at any time.
The principal is also a learner. She has attended two courses (2008 and 2002) at Harvard University to enhance her skills in creating an exemplary school. She has completed her Supervisory Officers’ Qualifications Course and has expanded her knowledge of practices related to the political and educational domains within the Board and throughout the province. She has participated in School Board teams such as the “Learning Improvement Team” and has learned much about “Managing by Walking About”, Curriculum Audit, Assessment and Evaluation, Facilitation Skills, etc. She is a co-founder and member of the Peel Principals’ Centre and the Provincial Councillor for the local chapter of the Ontario Principals’ Council. She also has taught the Principals’ Qualifications Program on six occasions for the Ontario Institute of Studies in Education (OISE-University of Toronto) and has recently written and delivered a Peel Board-based version of this course. These experiences help her to learn from others and build a strong learning network to assist in her personal growth. Both staff and the administration at Artesian Drive Public School role-model learning and inspire continuous improvement in others.
As principal, I am extremely impressed with how welcoming and positive the interactions with parents have been to date. We encourage parental involvement and elicit support from the community to enhance the education of our students. We appreciate our very supportive School Council and we welcome every parent to participate in our meetings. Your input is extremely valuable and we learn a great deal from open communication with each other.
Please surf our new website and find out more about Artesian Drive Public School. Updates will be posted there as we prepare for the upcoming year, and throughout the school year. If you have ideas or suggestions about how we can improve our practice, feel free to write your ideas on the space allocated for input on our monthly newsletters which will be sent home the third Thursday of each month. All comments will be read by the principal. We are here to serve your children with your support.
Welcome! Get involved! Be a partner in your child’s learning journey!
